It was the Cro Magnon that first started painting in caves and shelters about 20,000 years ago, although long before that our Neandertahl ancestors did carve objects into the cave walls, but they never used paints or dye's. Probably the most famous cave paintings in the world is Lascaux in the Vezere Valley, which is known as the "Prehistoric Sistine Chapel"
